Stoke Gifford Parish Council
Parish Councils are the first tier of local government and the closest to the community they serve. As a tier of local government they are elected bodies, with discretionary powers and rights laid down by Parliament to represent their communities and provide services for them.
Stoke Gifford Parish is located in the north of Bristol and to the west of the M32 and south of the M4 motorway. The parish's 1717 acres comprises Stoke Gifford, Little Stoke, Harry Stoke, UWE, Stoke Park and the new Cheswick housing developments and has twelve elected councillors who were duly elected in May 2011 to serve its 12,500 plus inhabitants.
Stoke Gifford earns its place on the map not only via its history which can be traced as far back to 1085 AD via entries in the Doomsday Book but contemporarily by important transport routes, educational establishments and businesses sited within the parish.
The parish holds Bristol's second railway terminal, Bristol Parkway Station, which is an important commuting point for trains plying both local, Great Western and Cross Country routes.
The major areas of employment include the MOD, University of West England, Hewlett Packard and Friends Life.
