Payments for GP Appointments (Concorde Medical Centre)

Dear Cllr Cranney,

Please let me assure you that there is no truth in this rumour. The AskMyGP service is a method by which patients can request advice or information from their GP rather than phoning the practice.  This is funded entirely by the practice and we neither charge now nor do we EVER have the intention of charging for the service. The NHS provides general medical services free at the point of care which is something we as a practice entirely endorse.  

We introduced the service to try and make it easier for patients to get the care that they need. The system helps us to be able to offer an appointment to those patients who need one and advice to those patients who are happy with advice. The vast majority of patients who want to be seen by a GP get seen by a GP on the day that they request an appointment. It is just not correct that they are all seen by the same GP. Today we have eight of our regular GPs seeing patients, supported by a clinical pharmacist, specialist physiotherapist and mental health nurse specialists who all consult directly with patients, as do the three nurses and three health care assistants who are also seeing patients today.

At the moment we are very busy with an epidemic of a serious flu like illness so patients may be waiting longer than they normally would on the phone.  The practice has employed locums to provide an extra 100 appointments a week, above normal demand, during this period but it is still very busy and we are really sorry that our patients are having to wait but like the A&E departments, our doctors and nurses are doing their very best to help everyone who needs care. There will be a public information response from the NHS locally asking patients to use their GP for urgent problems only until this epidemic subsides.

I appreciate you contacting us about this rumour which gives us the chance to correct it and to reduce the understandable alarm that such false messages create. We would be pleased if you would circulate this response.

Further to my telephone message left on your practice answer phone earlier today with regard to concerns being expressed by local residents.

Please note : The enclosed comments that are appearing on social media with regard a suggestion that the medical practice might be requesting a payment to obtain an appointment with a doctor at Concorde Medical Centre.

I have looked at the Concorde Medical Centre website and cannot identify anything that might suggest that this is an option currently being offered to patients.

However if you could confirm whether there is some possible mis-information being circulated it would be helpful.

Please contact me If you might find it helpful to circulate a practice statement which Stoke Gifford Parish council and local Councillors would be very happy to put on our Parish Council website and /or circulate on the local Notice Boards within the parish to ensure that local residents / patients are not misled by what they are hearing within the local community at the moment.

Ageing Better Consultation

Community Engagement at South Gloucestershire have written to Stoke Gifford Parish Council to make them aware of the Ageing Better Consultation.

The Ageing Better Plan brings together the outcomes and priorities that will guide their work to support older people (age 65+), the way they will measure their progress and how they will work to realise their ambitions. It is based on data, evidence and consultation with older people and wider partners across the area.

They are holding two consultation events, one of which is a drop in event, open to the public and is taking place Wednesday, 22nd November 2017, Yate Outdoor Sports Complex between 9:30am – 12:30pm. Everyone is welcome and they would encourage everyone to attend, as it is really important that people have their say.

The second event is being held for voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations, on Wednesday, 29th November, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at The Batch, Cadbury Heath.

Bristol Parkway Weekend Closures

Please see attached document received from Network Rail regarding the next stage of Bristol Parkway upgrade, and the forthcoming weekend closures during the month of November.

For information, the closure dates in November have been confirmed as follows: 

     Saturday, 4th - Sunday, 5th November 2017 

     Saturday, 11th - Sunday, 12th November 2017 

     Saturday, 18th - Sunday, 19th November 2017.

Notification of Consultation on M4 Junction 18a Options

South Gloucestershire Council launched a consultation on Monday, 21st August 2017, which will help inform a feasibility study into options for a new motorway junction, 18a, to link the M4 with the A4174 ring road.

The consultation is running until Monday, 16th October 2017, and everyone with an interest in the new junction is encouraged to have their say by completing a survey.

They are asking residents and businesses for their views on two options: a Western route and an Eastern route.

Western Route

This route would use Westerleigh Road and the A4174 ring road adjacent to Lyde Green in Emersons Green. This would mean the new Junction 18a could be located to the north west of the Lyde Green development. It would require some realignment to the M4 itself.

Eastern Route

This route explores the potential of building a link road and junction to the north and west of Pucklechurch. This would require the creation of a new link road, but a new motorway junction could be accommodated without the need to realign the M4.

All consultation material, including the survey and guidance on how to respond, is available at

They are carrying out a number of public exhibitions which will be held at community venues. The format will be a drop-in session, so that people can come along at a time which is convenient to them. The dates, times and locations are as follows:

The swiftest way for those involved to be removed is where there is evidence of significant increase in crime and disorder after encampments have been set up.  The Police records don’t currently show all of the incidents described over recent days. Police advice is to ensure all incidents are reported – that will help provide the evidence the Police need in order to move people on using their Section 61 powers, in additional to the current legal process for eviction currently being pursued by the Council.

Further to the update posted this morning, please note the court summons has now been served on all relevant parties for a hearing at the Bristol Magistrates Court on Friday 18th August 2017.

Bristol Magistrates Court has now issued the summons for proceedings for an Order for the removal of the gypsies which will be heard by the Court on Friday morning.  The summons will be served at the site this afternoon (Wednesday).  If the encampment has not removed itself by Friday’s hearing time, an Order will be obtained from the Court and arrangements will be made for it to be executed on the site as swiftly as possible with bailiff and police support.  In the meantime, the site will continue to be monitored by the Traveller Unit and cleaned up as necessary.

It is confirmed by South Gloucestershire Council that the necessary papers to initiate the Court hearing on Friday have this evening been deposited with Bristol Magistrates Court. When the summons has been issued by the Court tomorrow (Wednesday, 16th August 2017), it will be served on the travellers in readiness for Friday’s hearing.  Should the Order for removal be granted, arrangements are in hand for a swift execution of it with police support.

Latest Update - Tuesday, 15th August 2017


A second S77 Notice was served by South Gloucestershire Council in respect of all vehicles and persons that have accessed another area, and this is due to expire at 16:00 today (15th August 2017).  Following expiration of the second S77 Notice, South Gloucestershire Council will serve legal proceedings under S78 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order in respect of the whole area, and are already liaising with the courts to secure a court hearing.  In the event that this matter does proceed to Court, an order in respect of both sites occupied will be sought at one hearing.


In the interim, arrangements have been made for a regular rubbish collection, and liaising with the Police will continue.


South Gloucestershire Council will also continue to negotiate with the travellers to encourage their removal in an attempt to avoid the need to resort to court proceedings.


Subsequent Update - Monday, 14th August 2017


Following expiry of Notice S77 with travellers remaining on site, South Gloucestershire Council can now issue legal proceeedings.  There is a process that needs to be adhered to, but in the meantime, it is also confirmed there is continued negotiating taking place to encourage them to move voluntarily.

Further Update at 16:42, Thursday, 10th August 2017

It is now confirmed that South Gloucestershire Council has served Notice S77 on the unauthorised encampment, stating they are required to vacate by 15:00 hours tomorrow, Friday, 11th August 2017.  It is also understood that a number of caravans and vehicles may have already moved off the site, and the position will be reviewed tomorrow afternoon.

Update 2.55pm Thursday 10th August 2017 - South Gloucestershire Council Officers are working with the Parish Council to secure the removal of the unauthorised encampment on the Forty Acres site.  Officers have visited the site on a number of occasions with welfare reports being produced. These reports are required to be undertaken in accordance with standard procedures.  Preparations are also being made for an S77 notice to be served to those on site on Thursday afternoon. This will require the removal from the site within 24 hours of serving the notice.  Officers will continue to negotiate with the families to secure their removal from the site at the earliest opportunity.  In the meantime, arrangements have been made for the collection of rubbish, along with continued liaison with the Police.
