Upcoming essential maintenance works: Trench Lane (M4 overbridge) closed 21 July - 10 October 2025

National Highways - 7th July 2025
We're undertaking essential maintenance works to the bridge at Trench Lane that spans the M4 motorway.
The works include replacing the bridge's expansion joints and undertaking drainage improvements. This is essential to maintain the safety of road users.
Closures
To enable us to complete our works safely, Trench Lane bridge will be closed in both directions.
The closure will be in place 24/7 from 21 July until 10 October 2025 (inclusive).
The closure will start immediately after the Trench Lane car boot sale site through to the roundabout with Woodlands Road.
Diversions
Well signed diversion routes will be in place.
The diversion for traffic approaching the bridge from the east will be via:
- Winterbourne Road/B4057
- Gloucester Road/A38
- Bradley Stoke Way
- this diversion is indicated with the blue lines on the map below.
The diversion for traffic approaching the bridge from the west will be via:
- Bradley Stoke Way
- the B4057
- Old Gloucester Road/B4427
- Trench Lane
- this diversion is indicated with green lines on the map below.
We're working closely with our colleagues at South Gloucestershire Council. We're making every effort to minimise the impact on the local community and travelling public.
We are aware that there are other road schemes taking place in the local area, and specifically that there will be a closure to northbound traffic on Bradley Stoke Way during the works. Diversion routes have been carefully planned with our local authority colleagues.
Please follow the signed diversion routes rather than following sat navs or using local cut throughs. This will help to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.
Dates may change at short notice due to poor weather conditions or operational reasons. If we're unable to complete our work as planned, we may need to continue beyond the dates stated above.
Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journeys during this time.
You can find live travel information on our Traffic England website. Or, our travel alerts give details of live incidents on our network.
